The four responses

What happens in your nervous system

When your brain detects a threat, your autonomic nervous system reacts before you have time to think. Fight and flight are mobilized states, powered by adrenaline. Freeze is an immobilized state, where the body slows down and shuts off. Fawn is a social strategy: staying safe by keeping others happy.

The threat does not have to be physical. Criticism, conflict, uncertainty and overload can trigger the same responses, especially in a nervous system shaped by long periods of stress.

When survival mode becomes everyday life

These responses are meant to be short. Problems start when your system gets stuck: constant irritability (fight), compulsive busyness (flight), chronic numbness or procrastination (freeze), automatic people pleasing (fawn).

The good news is that nervous systems can learn. Small, repeated practices of regulation teach your body that it is safe enough to come back down.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 4 stress responses?

Fight (confronting the threat), flight (escaping it), freeze (shutting down) and fawn (appeasing it). They are automatic survival responses driven by your nervous system.

Are fight, flight, freeze and fawn trauma responses?

They are normal survival responses that everyone has. They are often called trauma responses when they fire frequently in situations that are not actually dangerous, which can happen after chronic stress or trauma.

Which stress response is most common?

There is no single answer: most people use a blend, and the dominant response depends on the person, their history and the situation.

How do I calm my nervous system?

Long, slow exhales, movement, grounding through the senses, safe connection with others and regular sleep are among the most reliable ways to bring your nervous system back to calm.
